Abstract

Corneal ulcers are characterized by the rupture of the epithelial membrane and exposure of the stroma, which can be superficial or deep. Healing can be harmed by collagenolytic bacteria, causing a progressive destruction of the corneal stroma, giving the cornea a macerated or gelatinous appearance, characteristic of the phenomenon known as melting, considered an emergency ophthalmological. Corneal cross-linking, using UV-A light and riboflavin, has been shown a viable alternative in controlling collagen degeneration and in biomechanical stabilization of the cornea. This report describes the application of cross-linking, associated with the third eyelid flap, in the treatment of collagenolytic ulcer bilateral in a Lhasa Apso dog. At the end of the treatment, effectiveness was observed of the techniques employed, with recovery of ocular integrity, leaving only a central scarred leukoma, proportional to the severity of the initial injury. The findings suggest that the association of cross-linking with the third eyelid flap findings suggest that the association of cross-linking with the third eyelid flap they prove effective for the treatment of deep collagenolytic ulcer in the case reported.
