HÁBITOS ALIMENTARES E PRINCIPAIS FORRAGEIRAS UTILIZADAS POR EQUINOS NA REGIÃO CENTRO NORTE DE GOIÁS

Abstract

Brazil has the third largest equine population in the world with more than five million animals and such breeding has been highly involved in the development of livestock and agricultural activities, in sports, military practices, leisure and transport throughout the national territory. It is worth mentioning that horses are herbivores with an enlarged digestive tract, which is essential for the breakdown of cellulose by the bacteria that live there. On the other hand, horses are not ruminants, in this case, the process of regurgitation of the food bolus does not occur. The basis of equine nutrition is fundamental for the animal's development, and the appropriate choice of forage for this species is essential. Therefore, the objective of the work was to carry out a bibliographical review on the main forage crops found in the state of Goiás recommended for horses. Articles and scientific research relating to the current theme were analyzed, disagreeing with the characteristic aspects of the forage found in this region.
