Abstract

This paper describes the activities carried out during the internship period, focusing on the selection and genetic management of animals. The experience provided by the internship was essential for the application of advanced techniques with the aim of optimizing the reproductive and productive performance of the herd, offering an in-depth understanding of the methodologies applied and their impact on genetic improvement. During the internship, several activities were carried out that were essential for the effective implementation of selection and genetic management strategies. One of the main areas of focus was the genetic evaluation of the animals. Detailed investigation of the genealogy allowed the identification of lines with a proven history of high productivity and genetic quality. In addition, the recording and analysis of data related to productive performance — such as weight gain, milk production and other relevant metrics — were essential to assess the potential of the sires. Assessment of physical conformation ensured that the animals had desirable structural characteristics, while health monitoring ensured that the health of the animals did not limit their productivity. The planning of selective crosses was another important aspect of the internship. The analysis of genetic complementarity between the sires allowed the combination of genetic characteristics that would maximize the expression of desirable qualities in the progeny. The practical experience acquired during the internship provided a detailed understanding of the methodologies applied and demonstrated the importance of an integrated approach to achieve excellence in animal production. The combination of advanced techniques and good management practices demonstrated the positive impact on the reproductive and productive performance of the herd, confirming the relevance of the practical application of theoretical knowledge in the field of animal genetics.
