Abstract

The Callithrix penicillata, known as the black-tufted marmoset, is a non-human primate belonging to the Callitrichidae family, which naturally inhabits gallery forest areas, is a diurnal and omnivorous species, with a diet composed of insects, fruits and, mainly exudate from trees. The present study aims to describe the treatment of a Callithrix penicillata, treated at the Sector of Wild Animals of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia (HV-UFU), with a condition of thoracic and pelvic limbs paralysis of unknown cause. Integrative therapy was instituted through the association of acupuncture, moxibustion, chromopuncture and physiotherapy sessions, in addition to allopathic antimicrobial therapy. Two weeks after the beginning of the treatment, the patient began to perform some movements and, approximately 30 days later, he was able to walk, run short distances and, with balance difficulties, he was still able to climb branches. Despite the significant improvement, the animal did not fully recover its balance and muscle strength, continuing to be treated with physiotherapy sessions. Integrative Medicine and Physiotherapy serve as an important therapeutic tool for the treatment and rehabilitation of domestic and wild animals, as they provide positive results without harmful effects. Such treatment proved to be efficient for the partial recovery of the individual, providing quality of life, but without the chance of reintroduction into the natural environment, in groups of the same species.
