Abstract: | Of the total cattle slaughtered in Brazil, 50% correspond to females. Many of them are feeling pregnant to slaughter, especially in periods and places of low supply of animals, where compensation for the rancher is higher. In the municipality of Morrinhos, over 90% of the slaughtered cattle contingent corresponds to females. Given this fact, and in order to obtain more information about the slaughter of pregnant bovine females, this study aimed to quantify the occurrence of pregnancy among slaughtered bovine females in the municipality. In doing so, the slaughter of 406 bovine females was followed in July and August 2016. After the usual slaughter procedure, the length and diameter of the uterus and uterine horns, the length of the fetuses were measured with tape and made Image registration. These measures were analyzed to identify the pregnancies of the animals. Descriptive statistical analysis of the data was performed. The results showed a pregnancy rate of 46.8% (190) in slaughtered bovine females, most of them being in the second third of pregnancy (46.84%). The number of bovine females in the first and third gestational thirds was very close (25.26% and 23.16%, respectively). This may be due to lack of technical assistance to the rancher and greater control in the slaughterhouse. It was concluded that almost half of the bovine females in this study were slaughtered pregnant, most of them in the second third of pregnancy. Keywords: cattle; slaughter; pregnancy; gestation |
