PLANTAS MEDICINAIS NA EDUCAÇÃO: UM RELATO DE EXPERIÊNCIA SOBRE A INTEGRAÇÃO ENTRE SABER POPULAR E CIÊNCIA

Abstract

Given the need to popularize science and encourage young people to be more interested in the field of Natural Sciences, this extension project sought to articulate scientific knowledge and traditional knowledge about the use of medicinal plants, promoting the popularization of science among first-year high school students at a state school in a city near the authors' institution. The methodology involved integrated stages of research, teaching, and extension, including the application of questionnaires, bibliographic research, practical workshops, lectures, and a visit to the campus's garden for the identification and planting of medicinal species, as well as the authors' participation in scientific events. The students demonstrated greater interest in science, recognized traditional knowledge, and reported on family practices related to medicinal plants. These activities also contributed to sparking scientific interest and fostering civic education among the participants, reaffirming the social role of science education in valuing biodiversity and popular knowledge.
