Abstract: Dicotyles tajacu (collared peccary) is a common species in different Brazilian biomes, including the Cerrado. As a medium-sized species, it may be potentially impacted by the rapid alteration of natural landscapes observed in this biome. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the interaction between the number of records and temporal activity of D. tajacu with habitat fragmentation and environmental pressures in areas of the Cerrado where the species occurs. The research was conducted across 31 sampling points during four campaigns, with a total effort of 3,720 camera-trap days. Native vegetation cover ranged from 7.36% to 25.65%, while agriculture dominated areas with over 70% agricultural use, showing a strong negative correlation between the two land cover classes (r = -0.95; P &lt; 0.01). A total of 517 records of the species were obtained, with a decrease in records in areas with higher agricultural coverage. Collared peccaries exhibited both diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns throughout the year. Time of day was the main predictor explaining the number of species records, although temperature also appeared as a secondary factor in the models. The species showed a preference for temperatures between 20°C and 32°C. Activity patterns revealed two peaks: one in the morning, between 3:00 and 7:00, and another at night, after 18:00, suggesting behavioral adjustments to avoid predation or human activities. Collared peccaries were more frequently recorded in less altered areas with higher percentages of native vegetation, where they can adjust their activities according to time of day and temperature. These results highlight the importance of preserving natural areas for the maintenance of collared peccary populations and suggest that agricultural expansion may have a negative impact on the species' distribution. Future research should investigate the interactions between Dicotyles tajacu and other sympatric species, as well as the alignment of their activity patterns with human activities, and their influences on spatial distribution and activity patterns.

Abstract: The Cerrado is one of the most biodiverse and threatened biomes in Brazil, being strongly &#xD;
impacted by agricultural expansion, which intensifies forest fragmentation and edge &#xD;
effects on natural remnants. This study evaluated the influence of different agricultural &#xD;
matrices on the structure and floristic composition of the arboreal community in a Cerrado &#xD;
forest fragment, as well as microclimatic alterations, through transects distributed &#xD;
between the edge and interior of the fragment. Microclimatic differences were observed &#xD;
among the evaluated environments, with agricultural matrices presenting higher &#xD;
temperatures, luminosity, and wind speed, in addition to lower relative humidity. The &#xD;
arboreal community showed high floristic richness, with 82 species distributed among &#xD;
botanical families, especially Fabaceae, Sapindaceae, Lauraceae, and Anacardiaceae. &#xD;
Species such as Bocageopsis mattogrossensis and Aegiphila integrifolia stood out due to &#xD;
their high ecological importance values. Multivariate analyses revealed high floristic and &#xD;
structural similarity among transects, suggesting that the environmental variations &#xD;
observed throughout the fragment were not sufficient to promote significant changes in &#xD;
the composition of the arboreal community. Nevertheless, small associations between &#xD;
species and environmental variables indicated gradual ecological responses within the &#xD;
fragment. The predominance of individuals in the smaller diameter classes and the high &#xD;
occurrence of standing dead individuals indicated a community under constant renewal &#xD;
and subject to continuous environmental pressures.

Abstract: Although Brazil is one of the countries with the highest mammalian diversity on the &#xD;
planet, gaps in knowledge regarding the distribution, ecology, and conservation of these &#xD;
species persist. Citizen science emerges as a promising tool to expand this understanding, &#xD;
engaging the non-specialist public in data collection and sharing. This study investigated &#xD;
the potential of digital citizen science platforms, focusing on iNaturalist, to contribute to &#xD;
the knowledge about Brazilian mammals (mastofauna) by evaluating their taxonomic and &#xD;
geographic coverage, temporal trends, and the socioeconomic factors associated with &#xD;
participation. Platforms such as iNaturalist, BioFaces, Sistema Urubu, Táxeus, and OBIS &#xD;
were analyzed, with selection criteria based on activity, accessibility, and ease of data &#xD;
extraction. iNaturalist stood out due to the volume of records (55,272 observations, 519 &#xD;
species) and its curation structure, although data were unevenly distributed across the &#xD;
Brazilian territory, concentrating in the South, Southeast, and Central-West regions. &#xD;
Statistical analyses, including the Shannon Index and association tests, revealed that the &#xD;
distribution patterns of observations may be influenced by factors such as urbanization &#xD;
and internet access. The results highlight challenges such as taxonomic bias (charismatic &#xD;
species being overrepresented) and geographic inequalities, but also underscore the &#xD;
potential of citizen science to democratize research and address knowledge gaps. The &#xD;
study provides valuable insights (geographic inequality, taxonomic bias, temporal trends, &#xD;
engagement, gaps, and opportunities) for future public engagement strategies and the &#xD;
conservation of Brazilian mammals.

Abstract: Galls are anomalous structures formed in plants in response to induction by insects, mites, or other organisms. In reproductive organs, they generally develop from ovules, often resulting in the formation of false fruits, whereas galls in fruits are rarely documented. This study investigates the galls induced by Neolithus fasciatus Scott, 1882 (Hemiptera) on Sapium glandulosum (L.) Morong, both in the floral nectary and in the fruit pericarp, with emphasis on the anatomy and pectic composition of the cell walls. Anatomical analysis was performed using historesin embedding and sectioning with a rotary microtome, whereas immunocytochemistry was used to assess homogalacturonans (HGs) and rhamnogalacturonans I (RG-I) in the galls and their corresponding ungalled organs. Inflorescence galls originate from the cellular redifferentiation of the floral nectary, which loses its sugar-secreting and pollinator-attracting functions and assumes a new structural identity aimed at protecting the gall. In contrast, pericarp galls form from the exocarp and mesocarp, primarily from the parenchyma. Structurally, both the floral nectary galls and the pericarp galls are similar, exhibiting a uniseriate epidermis with a thin cuticle and a cortex composed externally of chlorophyllous parenchyma and internally of fundamental parenchyma, as well as collateral vascular bundles. Immunocytochemical analysis revealed strong labeling of methyl-esterified HGs in the similar galls induced in different organs, indicating the maintenance of elasticity and active growth.; Pericarp galls also showed marked labeling for RG-I with (1→4)-β-D-galactan side chains, which are associated with cell hypertrophy and plasticity. These pectins were also intensely labeled in the phloem cell walls, suggesting increased flexibility and support for the elevated flow of photoassimilates required to sustain the inducing insect, which has a sucking feeding apparatus. The maintenance of a complex pectic matrix, distinct among host organs, reveals the influence of the host tissue’s organization, whereas the structural similarity of the gall tissues highlights the central role of the inducer in phenotypic convergence.
