Abstract

Hoof problems are one of the main sanitary challenges in livestock farming, resulting in a series of losses. Effective control and treatment require an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the hoof, allowing for the precise identification of lesions and the application of appropriate therapeutic interventions. Recognizing early signs of hoof problems, such as lameness, is crucial for a favorable prognosis. The main diseases include laminitis, sole ulcers, white line disease, digital dermatitis, interdigital hyperplasia, heel erosion, interdigital hyperplasia, digital dermatitis, phlegmon, hematomas, and abscesses. Prevention is the most effective and economical approach, requiring the identification and correction of risk factors. The aim of this technical article is to present the main aspects related to bovine hoof health, providing information from hoof anatomy to the importance of hoof health, including the main pathologies, treatment, risk factors, and prevention.
